THE SEARCH FOR HOUSING MADE EASIER: CIDNY IMPROVES THE NEW YORK STATE HOUSING ACCESSABILITY REGISTRY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The search for affordable housing is a daunting prospect for most  New Yorkers, for New Yorkers with disabilities who need housing that is also accessible, the search can be nearly impossible.  A new version of CIDNY’s New York State Housing AccessAbility Registry (the Registry) is now online, listing over 4,000 affordable and market-rate units throughout New York State, including information on accessibility features.  The site, www.nysaccessiblehousing.org, is the first New York State housing registry specifically for people with disabilities.

The easy-to-use Registry gives people with disabilities the ability to search for housing from upstate to downstate, by town, Zip Code, or major city area.  Developments listed in the Registry contain contact information for the site owners and property managers.  By entering basic criteria, people with disabilities can also get: vacancy information, developments known to have accessible and affordable units, and active wait lists and lotteries.

The search page allows users to search for Accessible Housing in several ways:

Vacancies and Waitlists: What's Available Now, or Soon?

Search by Location: What's in my area, regardless of availability?

Search Using Specific Criteria: What developments fit my specific needs or qualifications?

After selecting some basic search parameters, users are then presented with a listing of developments that meet their criteria.  Users can then click on a development for detailed information
