HAVA Implementation
in Jeopardy
NY Actions Threaten HAVA Nationwide
A Federal Judge has given New York State
until April 10, 2006 to
submit its HAVA implementation plan. The US DOJ lawsuit makes the process confidential
until the submission of the plan. The state board of elections didn’t add any
comfort to the prospect of a bona fide plan when they diverted their attention
last week to “counting people with disabilities who might vote.” This was seen
as just another diversion from doing anything but complying with the law.
Since this week will be crucial before the
plan’s submission on Monday, April 10th, and the result could have a
negative impact on HAVA implementation and/or enforcement nationwide, we need
you to send a response to the four leaders of New York State
government to voice your concern. The message will emphasize how the precedent
set in New York could diminish voting access for Americans with
disabilities in other states. It will call upon the elected leaders to accept
their responsibilities and do the right thing – comply with the law.
